So our Christmas tree recently has been rather thin. Not enough foliage, not even green stuff, and the branches are a bit too visible. So of course, we try to make do.
In order to give the tree a bit more thickness, we use the ornaments. All sorts of things really, Christmas balls and other trinkets. By adding more of these things to the tree, we attempt to conceal its sparseness. We also add Christmas lights. These do two things. One, they add to the thickness of the tree by adding yet another layer of something. And two, they draw the eye away from the lack of foliage to something else, namely lights of different colors, which can be running, or blinking, or fading in and out.
Basically, we try to load the Christmas tree with all sorts of stuff in order to add weight to the thing. If we didn't do that, it would just seem so light. At least this way, looking at the tree, we don't really feel anything negative about it.
